What is brand voice?
Brand voice is the consistent personality a company expresses in its writing — vocabulary, sentence rhythm, formality and attitude. It stays the same across channels, while tone shifts with the situation.
Voice and tone are routinely confused and are not the same thing. Voice is constant: a brand that is dry and precise is dry and precise everywhere. Tone adapts to context — the same voice is warmer in a welcome email than in an outage notice.
A voice guide is only useful if it constrains something. "Friendly, professional, innovative" rules out no sentence anyone would write. Guides that work name specific words to use and avoid, state whether contractions are allowed, give a typical sentence length, and show before-and-after pairs of real edits.
Those before-and-after pairs are the most valuable artifact, and the most useful thing to feed a generative tool. A rule describes the target; an edit demonstrates it. Showing a model what a colleague actually changed teaches the voice far more reliably than any list of adjectives.
