What is an AI sales agent?
An AI sales agent is software that carries out sales work end to end rather than assisting with one step — researching target accounts, deciding who to contact, writing the outreach, and handling replies, with a human approving the parts that matter.
The distinction that matters is between a tool and an agent. A tool waits to be asked: you give it a prompt or a list, it returns copy or data. An agent is given an objective — fill the pipeline with accounts matching this profile — and works out the intermediate steps itself, taking action between them.
In practice an AI sales agent covers four jobs a rep would otherwise do by hand: working out the ideal customer profile, finding companies that match it, identifying the right people inside those companies, and writing outreach that references something specific and true about each one.
The serious question to ask of any of them is what happens when it is wrong. A well-built agent proposes and a human disposes: accounts land in an approval queue, drafts wait for a review, and autonomy increases only when the results justify it. An agent that emails strangers under your name with no approval step is not more advanced — it is just less careful with your domain reputation.
